Running to Remember My Mom

30 years ago my mother passed away as a result of melanoma. This year isn't only the thirtieth anniversary of her death, it's also the year I became the age she was when she died. When I look at my 3 kids I cannot begin to comprehend the anger, sadness and fear she must have felt dealing with her illness and ultimately accepting the end of her life.
I am running the Long Island half marathon on May 1st in tribute to my mother, Maureen. By channeling my emotions into my training, I'm hoping to achieve something positive from this sad anniversary. To honor Maureen, I am also raising funds to make a donation in her memory to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
My mother spent summers without sunscreen and developed metastatic melanoma when she was 36. It was only 3 short years between the time my father noticed an abnormal mole and her untimely death. Although most people are much more aware of sun safety these days, more than 76,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year and more than 10,000 people will die from the disease.
The Melanoma Research Foundation was founded 20 years ago and focuses on research, education and advocacy. They support medical research for finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma. They educate patients and physicians about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma. And lastly, they act as an advocate for the melanoma community to raise awareness of the disease and a need for a cure.
