Historically Black College Tour

Wow! Year #3 and going strong!  -- For the 3rd year in a row, I am taking some of my students from Alliance Judy Ivie Burton Technology Academy High School on a Historically Black College and University Tour. During our spring break, I am providing my students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to such historical black colleges as Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta University, Tuskegee University, Bennett College, North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Morgan State University, and Howard University. They will also visit historical sites and centers such as the Martin Luther King Center, the childhood home of Dr. King, Ebenezer Baptist Church, CNN, the Coca-Cola Museum, and various other notable historical sites in Washington, DC.

While there is not a large Black population at my school, I have managed to take 12 students in the past 2 consecutive years, and I am looking to take 6-10 more students this year. For 99% of the students, it will be their first time on an airplane, their first time out of the state, their first time away from home, and their first time being exposed to HBCU’s.  In the past, this tour and experience changed my students’ outlook about other Black students in general and their own  lives, dreams and goals. Further, it opened their eyes to a different world, HBCU’s, as well as changed how they conducted themselves in school, motivating them to work harder to better themselves both academically and personally.

For the last few months, from September to December 2014, the students have been raising funds by selling snacks during nutrition, lunch, and at parent meetings. They have hosted a yard sale and will be sponsoring a Wing Stop night on January 21, 2015 and a Pechanga Casino trip on January 31, 2015.  In March, we will embark on our journey. While they have been working diligently to raise money, they are still short of the necessary funds to do the tour. The money needed is to pay for hotels, ground transportation, food, and airfare. We would appreciate any help financially or in-kind donations.  If you are in L.A. and would like to attend the Pechanga Casino trip, please contact me - [email redacted]. We appreciate and thank you for your participation in our fund drive.
