Amelia is a little comedian who loves to party and dance and is battling Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma Cancer and OMS.
Neuroblastoma accounts for 6% of pediatric cancers and with only 800 new cases per year, it is difficult to treat and survivors face multiple life changing side effects. OMS affects 2-3% of the neuroblastoma population and 1 per million individuals worldwide.
After undergoing tumor removal the day before her 2nd birthday her family was told by her doctors they expected her to have a good chance for remission. Sadly, that was not the case. Not long after her initial diagnosis and surgery, scans showed that Amelia had new tumor growth near her spine and encasing her aorta. She was immediately put on an aggressive chemotherapy regimen in hopes of stopping her cancer in its tracks.
While her OMS is drastically improved by the treatments, Amelia's cancer is considered metastatic and she is now high-risk (stage 4).
Amelia is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatments. It is difficult to predict who will respond to certain treatments. Treatments may include surgery, radiation, stem cell transplants, and immuno therapy. Despite the side effects of her treatment, repeated hospitalizations and restrictions on her activities, Amelia’s spunky personality continues to shine through. Her team is amazed at what a good patient she continues to be as she steals the hearts of all who meet her.
Though this cancer is labeled rare it seems more and more children are facing life threatening diseases. No child should go through this. We need to find answers. We need to find cures.
