Hazel is a spunky, sassy, vibrant, beautiful little girl. She was born on January 24th, 2019 in Little Rock, AR. She has been in Arkansas Children’s Hospital ever since. Hazel was diagnosed with many heart defects which are: complete atrioventricular canal defect, severe AV valve deficiency, left superior vena cava to coronary sinus connection, and a coarctation of the aortic arch. Hazel also has Trisomy 21 also known as Down Syndrome.
Hazel had her first open heart surgery at 7 days old and her second one at 3 months old.. but to no avail. Her heart is just too small and too sick. Hazel then got to be listed for a heart transplant!! We were so happy, but just a week later we were told she was too sick and would not be a good candidate for a transplant.. so she was removed from the list. She has been in the hospital for her whole life. She will be recovering her 3rd open heart surgery on July 11th, 2019. This surgery will be to place a mechanical valve in her heart. It is our last resort— since hazel is so small, she will be growing rapidly.. this means she will need many surgeries in the future to change the size of the mechanical valve because it can’t grow with her heart. We have a long, tough battle in front of us. I know our sweet Hazel Kate can make it through this!
