On September 6, 2020, the unthinkable happened to our 3-year old niece, Hazel. While at home with her family, little Hazel spilled a bowl of hot soup onto herself by accident. She was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where it was estimated that she had 2nd degree burns. But things have only gotten worse; after two surgeries, we have now learned that she has 3rd degree burns, and that more surgeries will be needed. Hazel is in immense pain, and the doctors have told us that this will be a long road to recovery.
Since the accident, Hazel has had to make two trips to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital. This is a four-hour roundtrip (at best) from where she lives. Due to the severity of her burns, it is expected that she will need to take many more of these trips in the weeks to come.
We are therefore raising money to support Hazel’s family during this horrible time. Her momma (Elecia) has turned down all shifts at work indefinitely so that she can be with her baby girl, and her daddy (Frank) is staying home as much as he can. Your support will go to defraying the mounting costs related to:
- travel to and from Sick Kids (in Toronto);
- specialized clothing for burn victims;
- food for the family while in the city and at home; and,
- other expenses not covered by OHIP (such as the original ambulance charge and an array of prescriptions and burn dressings not covered by the family’s drug plan).
Hazel is also bed-bound and, like any 3-year old, is in need of extra activities and equipment to help her heal while immobilized. No donation is too small, and every dollar counts.
At momma’s request, limited pictures will be shared.
If donations exceed our original goal, we’ll increase it and every dollar will go to supporting the family and Hazel’s recovery.
