Hi my name is Tracey and I am one of the founders of the Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary which is a small independent sanctuary that provides a safe home for ex-working, abused, unwanted and abandoned donkeys with the help of supporters donations.
With 33 donkeys in our care we have seen over these last few months an unprecedented amount of essential vet bills which even now are ongoing…
- The unexpected birth of Dominic who had to be hospitalised due to being born with neonatal maladjustment syndrome
- Charlie Brown’s biopsies, investigations and treatment for a rare autoimmune disease attacking his skin
- Dougal’s ongoing investigations for skin issues and general decline in condition resulting in several months of various treatments.
- Annie’s investigations, X-rays and treatment for a long term lameness.
- Charlie Brown’s hospitalisation, treatment for impaction, enlarged colon along with numerous complications leading to his sad demise.
- Annie’s emergency call out and treatment for colic.
- Dentistry for all the donkeys
- Equine Flu and Tetnus vaccination for all the donkeys
- Percy’s emergency call out and treatment for a cut to his leg.
- Tuckers Asthma treatment and purchase of a nebuliser
- Ollie’ call out, investigations and treatment for a sinus infection and loss of appetite.
- Annie’s Admission to hospital for an MRI scan for her ongoing lameness.
- Annie’s hospitalisation for surgery to remove an unknown mass in her foot.
- Dougal’s hospitalisation for ultrasound investigations after further decline in condition.
- Dougal and Annie are both still in hospital and likely to be there for a week as a lot of issues to address..
This is proving to be a heavy drain on our resources particularly when added to the cost of caring for several other elderly donkeys at the sanctuary needing specialised on going treatment and life long medication.
Since the new year we have received vet bills exceeding £20,000 with more yet to come and are looking to raise funds to contribute towards these it’s literally been one thing after another with the donkeys and the vets have been out which seems like every day!
We have to throw it out to you our supporters in the hope you can help it’s such a constant worry and a strain so many sleepless nights, we often question ourselves!
