No one wants to be left out in the cold. But as the days get colder and winter sets in, Flying Change Equine Therapy has an immediate funding need in order to care for the many hurting children and adults who come to us, and for our loving therapy horses that make it all possible.

This winter, our equine therapy and rescue farm has unexpectedly lost a large source of our funding -- we need immediate help in the form of volunteers and donations to get through the winter!

We have never left anyone out in the cold. Many of those who need our services the most are the least able to afford treatment, but we have never turned away someone we could help because they couldn’t pay for therapy!

With your help, we will continue to provide scholarships for our clients who have suffered much tragedy and loss, as well as provide our hard-working therapy horses with high quality hay, feed, bedding, and veterinary care to support the gift of healing they give to our clients.

Healing When All Else Fails

Founded in 1996, Flying Change Equine Therapy is an internationally recognized program that partners rescued horses in equine assisted psychotherapy with children, adults and families healing from trauma. Those in therapy raise and rehabilitate the horses as part of their own healing.

Our clients are recovering from the fallout of life’s tragedies like childhood neglect and abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, natural disasters and the trauma of war and combat.

They come to us from foster care, group homes, psychiatric hospitals, family and juvenile courts, addiction rehab centers and the VA hospital.

They are often referred to Flying Change because no other type of treatment has helped them. Without effective therapy now, they are likely to continue the cycles of substance abuse, mental illness, and family violence that have robbed them of the ability to cope. In a study of our services, 82% of teens improved more in just 5 hour-long sessions of equine assisted psychotherapy than they had in 2 years of traditional talk psychotherapy.

Rescuing ‘Unwanted’ Baby Horses

All of our therapy horses are rescues known as “nurse mare foals.” A nurse mare is a female horse that is impregnated so she will produce milk. After she gives birth, she is leased for money to nurse another foal with an expensive pedigree and a bright future. The nurse mare’s own baby – the nurse mare foal - is literally left out in the cold to starve to death or is killed.

Through our MercyFoal rescue program we pair someone healing from trauma with a rescued foal. The foals are tiny and fragile when we rescue them, only days or weeks old:

Like these foals, many of our therapy clients have felt thrown away, abandoned and left to starve, emotionally or physically. The clients and their foals share a similar story. They understand each other. By pairing a client healing from trauma with a rescued foal, we give them both something to live for, someone that needs them, a reason to live and thrive.

You can help us ensure that none of these hurting hearts are left in the cold!

This spring marked our 23rd year, and while we grow every year we also face new challenges. One of our biggest funding sources was unexpectedly cut from the federal budget. We have additional funding lined up that begins in March, but we have a shortfall over the winter. We would like to raise money for winter horse care expenses and therapy scholarships.

We won’t let anyone be left in the cold! With your help, we can give those who come to us – human and rescue horses -- their best chance to recover in the New Year and live a life full of love. Join us in fighting for them!
