Who we are:
We are the Alakaʻi, the teens of Nā Kama Kai, an organization dedicated to creating responsible stewards of the sea, the next generation of ocean caretakers, water-men and water- women, community leaders, and MENTORS! We love Nā Kama Kai because we are treated with respect and so much aloha. Our mentors care about who we are and what we can do.
What we do:
We teach younger kids about marine ecosystems and paddle them out in canoes by volunteering at ocean clinics around ʻOahu. And our mentors teach us all about what they know and love including their own experiences with the ocean like voyaging and navigating by the stars with the Hokuleʻa.
Why are we fundraising:
We are going to Tahiti for a cultural exchange!!!!
We believe that we can and that we do make a difference in the community and to the ocean and land. The GoFundMe page is one way the Alakaʻi are raising money to go to Tahiti for a cultural exchange this April. The money that we raise will go towards our lodging and airfare.
Why we want to go:
The Tahiti cultural exchange means so much to us for lots of reasons. Most of us have never been to another country, so this opportunity is new and EXCITING.
What we will learn:
We will visit with and learn from our Polynesian cousins, about their connections and stories to the ocean and voyaging. We will visit the birthplace of Pele, a sacred goddess of the Hawaiian people, visit with the crew members of the voyaging canoes: Hokuleʻa of Hawaiʻi, and the Faʻafaite of Tahiti, and learn more and more about Polynesian navigation.
How we will build our ocean community:
We will even get to do an ocean clinic in Tahiti for Tahitian children and families. Traveling to Tahiti would help us grow, make new friends, and strengthen our cultural bonds and connections to the ocean and to each other.
Our promise:
We promise to represent Hawaii with aloha & to bring back what we have learned to share with others.
Our outreach to the community:
