Dr. Jack O’Brien was a beloved physician who cared for thousands of patients in the LGBTQ+ community. His natural ability to make patients feel seen and heard inspired him to start his own doctor’s office with his best friends, and thus Haven Health was born.
Open for just a few months, Haven was an immediate success, serving nearly 1,000 patients across the Los Angeles area. Jack was ecstatic that he could help so many people. It was just the beginning of his dream.
But on June 27th, he unexpectedly passed away. He was 36 years old.
His co-founders, friends, and family are mourning this tragic loss, but are determined to keep Haven alive, and in spirit, keep Jack alive too.
That’s why we’re asking our community for help. The community that Jack fostered is the one we believe can keep us going.
But we don’t have much time. Under California law, a medical practice must be physician-owned. We have under 60 days to find a new physician owner, or Haven cannot continue. This would affect our hundreds of marginalized patients.
Any donation, big or small, is crucial in helping us cover:
- Operational business costs to minimize disruption (legal fees, rent, etc.)
- Temporary physician oversight so Jake Collins (PA) and Sharla Day (MA) can continue to serve patients and ensure their care continuity
- Our search and restructuring costs for new clinical ownership
Every dollar will go directly to keeping Haven's doors open and Jack's memory alive, and we'll share updates with donors along the way.
The values that Jack instilled in us are strong and will guide who we believe should continue his clinical legacy at Haven.
Jack always said, “Every human has one thing that you can connect to, you just have to find it.” And he did. Every patient, no matter what they believed or where they came from, would walk out of that exam room with a huge smile. Jack was a star and the exam room was his stage.
Please help us keep that stage alive.
With Love,
