Hauhui Medical Clinic - Solomon Islands

Hi, my name is Trevor Wallace and I have been managing small projects in the Solomon Islands for about 15 years, including High School Education Scholarships and Nursing Scholarships for young people in poverty who could never afford education.

My new project is to support a young woman, who received a scholarship through one of my previous projects to study Nursing at the Solomon Islands National University. Her name is Jessica Tarihahia and is now a Registered Nurse working in a government clinic called Hauhui Medical Clinic. Jessica is the sole nurse there working on her own with no other nurses or a doctor. The nearest hospital is in Auki, four hours truck ride or two hours boat ride away. She provides obstetric, medical and emergency care by herself. Totally amazing young lady I am just so proud of.

Jessica has asked for financial support to replace the rusted iron roof, install water tanks, solar lighting and update the toilets and bathroom for the patients as well as some painting. The Hauhui community will provide the labour. They just need the finance to buy these things.

The roof is badly rusted with large holes. Jessica, who keeps in regular touch, informed me that she recently was delivering a baby and rain water was falling on the baby and mother. She also delivered baby under torchlight as the solar lighting was broken. Compare this to the modern hospitals and medical equipment we have here in Australia.

I am hoping to raise about $10,000 AUD to repair and update the Hauhui Medical Clinic and provide a better environment for Jessica to provide medical care to the local community.
