My father is a very kind and giving person. He has been working in Healthcare for the past several years and has always been there for us through everything. Over the past two years his health has dramatically declined.
Two years ago he went into the Hospital with an internal bleed and severe stomach pain. Both were bad enough to cause him to pass out multiple times. Several scans and consultations later the doctors were no closer to identifying what was causing the bleed. Over the course of the next 6 days he lost 12 units of blood and coded. He had been pronounced dead but wasn't willing to quit just yet. Fortunately one of his doctors found the cause of the internal bleed and was able to stop it, saving his life. He was released from the hospital two days later with a diagnosis of Polyarteritis Nodosa. His concern about his family's wellbeing and the mounting medical bills had him back at work less than a week later, taking care of us and making sure we were provided for.
It was during the scans for this bleed that it was discovered that he had bladder cancer. He went to the oncologist and a surgery was scheduled to remove the cancer and begin chemotherapy. He came through it and was looking forward to continual cancer free appointments. To be sure the cancer doesn’t come back he goes in every three months for a checkup.
In June, because of Covid-19 he was laid off from his job, He has been sending out resumes and taking interviews every week, even for much lower paying positions but jobs in his career field of Medical Economics and Finance are scarce in the Marketplace. Two weeks age he went into the ER with another internal bleed which was thankfully repaired quickly. This time during the CT scan they found cancer in one of his kidneys and a blush on his liver. He’s scheduled for surgery, January 4th, to remove the effected kidney and all connecting pathways to his bladder. The hospital stay will be approximately 3 days.
My family has gone through most of our savings just to survive during this tight job market. We are all doing what we can, but just surviving these past six months has eaten up all of our savings and emergency savings. We do not know how we are going to pay medical bills, scans, Hospital stays, medications and ongoing treatments. He is still looking for full time work, but it’s very slow to even get interviews right now. He is a very loving and caring man. He has gone so far as to adopt a daughter in order to give her a better life, and opportunities she had never had growing up. He just wants the best for those he loves and can help.
We just got the information that just the basic surgery will be $30,000.00 . We have no idea how we will be able to pay for all of this . The totals, with hospital stay, medication, anesthesia, etc., are expected to be in the $60,000.00 range. That doesn’t include just paying everyday bills to keep our house and utilities running.
I know it’s a big ask, especially when everything is so hard for so many, but if you are able to help at all you would be blessing our family with the ability to get through something unbearable. Cancer is such an invasive and unpredictable disease. It reminds us everyday that today isn’t guaranteed, but any help you can offer gives him the opportunity to fight for another tomorrow.
