Hats with a Mission - A Micro Preemie Gives Back

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Sarina and I am seeking your help to raise money for materials to knit hats for our tiniest and most vulnerable babies - micro-preemie babies.

As a micro-preemie myself, I had a very difficult start in life. I was born four months too soon in August of 1990 and weight one pound and fifteen ounces or 881g.  Like all micro-preemies, my lungs had not developed yet, so I had many complications.

I had to stay in the hospital for six months before I could go home. My resulting challenges which I call "hiccups" prevent me from living alone,  but I don’t let them define me.

One of my favorite pictures has always been of myself in the incubator wearing a tiny hat my mom had knit for me.

When I learned how many preemies are born to disadvantaged families,  who go home without a hat to keep them warm, I wanted to give back. My love for knitting gave me the idea and Hats with a Mission was born.

When I started my project in May of this year, I was hoping to deliver 25 hats to the Neonatal ICU (NICU) in Cincinnati, OH, where I was born. The nurses and doctors there saved my life. On August 23rd I will deliver 40 hats to them.

On my 29th Birthday a few days ago we counted 120+ hats knitted for babies in Germany, and the U.S. I had hoped to have 100 hats by the end of the year!

Hats with a Mission has grown beyond my wildest dreams!

While on vacation in my parent's hometown in Germany we hosted charity knitting events and I was able to gift forty-six beautiful hats to the local hospital where my mom was born.

Santa Rosa's magazine Bennett Valley Living wrote a story about Hats with a Mission and people have been reaching out to us to support and knit for us. Whenever needed we supply yarn and needles or teach how to knit.

Senior homes are soon knitting for us. We deliver wool and needles so they can be part of our growing community.

Can you imagine seniors knitting for preemies?

Girls Scouts have contacted us and want to help. We're teaching them how to knit or crochet hats for us.

I'm sharing my story to help others understand what it means to live life with daily challenges.

I want to inspire others to join me in helping as many tiny babies as possible worldwide to receive a quality hand-made hat, knitted with love,  to keep them warm and get them started on their road to success.

I want to show the world what's possible if we focus on the strength and not the weakness and help each other. Together we're stronger!

Your support will pay for the yarn, needles, advertising, and shipping expenses to Neonatal ICUs who can gift the hats to our tiniest friends.

We're using the highest quality organic fibers; each hat cost $30, including shipping to its new home.

You can help to keep the tiniest babies warm by donating, ordering hats from us, or even knitting or crocheting hats to send to us! Email us for the pattern.

Thank you very much for your consideration and for helping me help my preemie brothers and sisters.

You can also invite your friends to help me reach my goal by sharing this page.

PS: I started knitting hats for myself and my family in 2016, and soon, people wanted to buy them. I was thrilled. The income allowed me to purchase taxi rides to town. I'm not able to drive, but my goal is to be as independent as possible.

My love for knitting helps me now to help others.
