My father, my dog Xena and I were evacuated by boat after crossing chest deep water in an attempt to evacuate our 1st floor apartment in Katy, TX. We had no idea the area let alone our entire complex would flood like it did. Later we found out why it flooded as it did. Fort Bend County failed to inform anyone that the area that was filled with water was actually an overflow flood area for the Barker Resevoir if it were ever to become filled, which it did. Hundreds of people including my family were affected by this because none of us purchased flood insurance we have to rely on FEMA as our only option.
On Aug 28th we left our place with what we could pack into back packs and headed toward our leasing office to evacuate as instructed via email.
11 days later the water finally receded enough to get into the complex, the roads are still flooded and blocked off by police.
Both our vehicles are flooded and our entire apartment is covered in mold. The water that remains inside is dangerous as the county issued a warning after a major sewage pipe burst contaminating floodwater with ecoli.
All of our belongings are soaked in this water and what little we were able to salvage smelt like the mold residue and is considered hazardous.
