Paramedic. Firefighter. Police Officer. Loving Grandfather. Musician. Carpenter. Drunk Driving Accident Victim. Pronounced Dead at the Scene. Coma Survivor...that escalated quickly.
While driving home one evening about 50 years ago, our "Grandpa Harvey" was in an accident caused solely by a drunk driver. The other vehicle landed on top of his, crushing our grandpa's ankle and face (thereby constricting his airway), leading the paramedics on-call to pronounce him dead at the scene of the accident. Lucky for his horde of large, obnoxious grandchildren, by some chance of fate a combat RN moved the sheet covering our presumed dead grandfather, which repositioned his detached lower jaw and cleared his airway, allowing him to breathe again. Grandpa had to have his entire face, jaw, and ankle reconstructed, after which he went on to become a firefighter, police officer, and paramedic.
Unfortunately, drunk driver's insurance and bone grafting technology back then were not as comprehensive or advanced as they are today. As such, Grandpa Harvey has very little jaw bone left and has suffered from dental problems since the accident leading up to now, when he recently began to have trouble eating. Our grandpa can barely consume food anymore, and in order to do so, he needs a very expensive dental surgery (which is not covered by insurance) involving more bone grafts and dentures. Grandpa Harvey is without a doubt our rock, he's always been so loving and supportive of everyone around him, and one of his great joys is cooking for and eating with our family. This surgery is vitally important not only to him but to his family, so we can continue loving our grandpa like the hero he is, and we appreciate any help you can give. Thank you so much!
