Today we lost my Dad, Harry, 5 days after his 69th birthday and the day before his 44th wedding anniversary to the love of his life, his wife and my Mum, Maggie.
In lieu of flowers at Dad’s funeral, we will be collecting funds to support research being performed by the Bill Walsh Laboratory into oesophago-gastric cancer.
Dad battled with both oesophageal cancer and triple hit lymphoma for 14 months, enduring a gruelling GMALL chemotherapy protocol followed by a bone marrow transplant to treat the lymphoma. Meanwhile the oesophageal cancer progressed and despite starting chemotherapy followed by immunotherapy, pneumonia related complications ultimately cut his treatment and his life too short.
Many of you would know, my Mum, Maggie was initially given a poor prognosis of 10-12 months after being diagnosed with Stage 3B lung cancer some 10 years ago. Mum is alive today despite distant metastasis because of a targeted chemotherapy agent developed through cancer research.
With cancer research, there is hope we can find new treatment approaches to enhance and prolong quality of life. I’d give anything right now to have just one more day with beautiful Dad. He was a true gentleman and will forever be missed.
