Harry Burd's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
On September 17th, our dad was in an ATV accident resulting in a severe traumatic brain injury. He was life-flighted to Geisinger's trauma center in Scranton, PA. The doctors told us he was fighting for his life. They put him in an induced coma. His brain was swelling so they performed a craniectomy, which is where they remove part of the skull to allow the brain to swell. During this time, he also had two strokes and pneumonia. He remained in the ICU for two weeks. They performed a tracheostomy to help him breathe and placed a peg tube in his stomach to give him nutrients and medication. After a month in the hospital and many battles with insurance, he was transferred to a long term acute care specialty hospital to wean off the ventilator. Here, he developed blood clots in his right leg due to limited mobility on his right side from the strokes. They placed a IVC filter to contain the blood clots. After 25 days here he was moved to an acute care rehab center. Here, he passed his swallow test to eat regular foods, and began intensive therapy with OT, ST, and PT. While here, he went back to Geisinger for another brain surgery to place his skull flap back on. The next day, the doctor called to say he developed hydrocephalus (which is fluid on the brain) and needed a shunt put in to drain the fluid. He had his third brain surgery later that day. After another month and a half of therapy in the acute care, he went to subacute care closer to home. He stayed here for another month until insurance sent him home. He has been home, which has had its fair share of challenges for not only him but to the family. Harry has been making slow improvements here at home. He has difficulty finding the words he wants to say, but he can read words, sing songs, get in and out of a car with assistance, and is working on standing. He has just been accepted to Kessler inpatient rehab in Chester, New Jersey where his current therapists and neurosurgeon believe he will improve drastically. Insurance has denied this needed treatment, but we are actively in the process of the appeals. This GoFundMe is to serve my dad's therapies, in-home aids, and needs on his road to recovery. Our dad worked for PSE&G and is a hardworking guy who loves his family and friends. He loves the outdoors, camping, playing corn hole, and sitting outside by the fire with a beer. We are praying that he will be back to doing all of his favorite things very soon. -Olivia and Harrison Burd

We are truly blown away by the amount of support Harry has gotten from everyone.  We know what a great dad and husband he is, but to see all of the people he has touched is amazing. Thank you all for your generosity and love. We are blessed.
