Harper's Heart
Donation protected
My twin sister and her husband have had a very ill daughter for the past 6 months. After months of going to Doctors and trying to solve the challenges she was facing ie: throwing up multiple times a day, high fevers, longer naps than normal, weight loss etc they found the problem after a simple chest x-ray.
Harper's heart was 3x the size it was supposed to be. She was born with a heart defect and it wasn't diagnosed until last week. The right ventrical had been blocked for quite some time. After 2 1/2 years of the heart working over time, it was extremely close (ie: days) to calling it quits.
The Saunders family was rushed down to Primary Children's Hospital immediatly. Six heart surgeons were there when they arrived and began discussing amongst themselves the best decision for Harper. They said, "Harper looks completely fine on the outside, but she is extremely ill on the inside", and "Most babies we have seen with this same heart defect usually never live past 6 months old." Scott and Mindy were given one choice to save their daughters life. Harper needed a full nights sleep in order to go through open-heart surgery the following day.
They began surgery 9 am the next morning. The family was prepared that Harper's stressed out heart might not ever work again but was still hoping for the best. After a long six hours with updates every hour, Harper was taken off the heart and lung machine and by, what surgeons call a miracle, her heart started working again.
The surgeon, who performed the surgery, shared with the Saunders that her heart will most likely stay the same size it is for the remainder of her life expectancy. We hope to have sweet Harper with us for the long-haul but only time will tell. Her heart has been trained to work over-time and they are currently introducing her to medicine to try to get that under control. As for the second day out of surgery, everything is stable.
The money donated will be used to help the Saunders family financially with current medical bills, future heart surgeries and adjustments with becoming full time care-takers for their sweet Harper.
Having five children (including their foreign exchange student) and having to go through this has been extremely stressful on the Saunders family. They have a long road ahead of them. The Saunders family would like to thank you in advance for your donation. Every dollar helps. Thank you!
