I had numerous friends and family reach out saying I should try this route as so many people care about Harper and I and want to support. I feel weird even doing it as there is so much going on in the world and everyone needs so much. That being said...
Harper is my family and my whole heart. We've been each other's constants and support through so much in 9 years. I always joke that she is going to live forever, and I weekly google "longest living beagle" to see what age she needs to beat (its Butch who lived til 27 in Virginia).
This past Sunday, her hind legs stopped working. They were dragging/paralyzed. After a long visit at the emergency vet, phone calls with her actual vet, a week of bed rest (no walking), and follow up appointment the following was determined:
Harper has Stage 3 IVDD, a degenerative disc disease in her spine/back. Luckily full paralysis hasn't set in, but over time without treatment it will just get worse and long term the quality of life is no walking, complete bed rest, etc. Without treatment the best case scenario is pain management. This could be weeks or years before it becomes too much.
Because her paralysis isn't fully set in, we have a window of time where an emergency neurological visit, MRI, and possible surgery can help her recover and slow all of this down. Unfortunately, the MRI/visit alone is almost $4k and if the doctor believes surgery is the only option, we have to make that decision SAME DAY to get the benefits of catching it before further neurological damage (and as she'll already be under anesthesia).
$4k would help cover the visit and MRI, which would have to be TOMORROW.
Another $4k would help cover if she needed surgery.
I had the appointment booked today at 5pm for 9:30am tomorrow in Ann Arbor. Then I canceled it once the costs came back and tearfully had to tell the vet that the only option I could make work was pain management.
After sharing what was going on, friends and family encouraged me to do this fundraiser. Thank you SO much for even considering it. I was putting together a plan for taking on extra work outside of my 9-5, but thought I'd have more time to make the $$ necessary over the next couple of months- not overnight. Today really threw me for a loop.
Harper could have 10 years left or 10 minutes. And so can each of us. Trying to live in the gratitude of the present and all we've had together, but just heartbroken knowing I can't give her everything she's given me due to this hardship.
Hold your loved ones and your pups extra close for us tonight <3
