Harmonys double transplant journey
Donation protected
On December 17th, 2022, two days before her 30th birthday, Harmony received a phone call from her doctor stating that her kidney’s were failing from having type one diabetes for 20 years and high blood pressure and only functioning at 9%. She had her appointment with Duke nephrology in January and they went over a game plan to keep her kidney’s from completely failing as long as possible. We were traveling to Duke every week for Harmony to get iron infusions. In February, the doctor took Harmony out of work because the nausea and pain had became unbearable. In March, we had to call the ambulance because she was found unresponsive from what we thought at the time was low blood sugar. Then in April, we had to call the ambulance again for what we thought was the same reason but this time was worse. We ended up at Duke’s emergency room and it was determined that Harmony had a seizure. Doctors decided right then to put her on emergency dialysis and place a port in her chest. She was in the hospital for a week to make sure that everything was running smoothly with her port. Since then Harmony as been admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions, one from having fluid on her lungs and the others from going into gastroparesis flare ups, trying to adjust to dialysis and the medication. She goes to dialysis on Tuesday’s, Thursdays, and Saturdays for 3 1/2 hours. In August, Harmony had surgery to place an access in her arm for dialysis so that can eventually take the port out her chest once it ready to use. She is on the transplant list to get both a kidney and pancreas. That way once she has her surgery, she will no longer be a type one diabetic.
Harmony has been afraid to put herself out there because she didn’t want to be judged or looked at differently. She finally got the courage and gave the me the “go” to put her story out here and get help with some of the expenses we have because it’s been a struggle having to go to dialysis every other day, and doctor appointments some days. We understand that times may be tough for all of us but any little thing will be truly appreciated.
