The northern border in Mexico has the highest rates of injection drug use in the country. Mexicali, in the state of Baja California, is a city with a high concentration of vulnerable populations, such as people who use substances, migrants and deportees.
Since 2013, the civil society organization, “Integración Social Verter” has provided harm reduction health services in the city. It has obtained funding from various institutions at the national and international level to carry out public health and human rights interventions with vulnerable populations.
In the summer of 2018, Verter started to create a Safe Consumption Service for the women who use their services: “La Sala”. They implemented strategies with high international standards for the prevention of overdose, transmission of HIV and HCV, occupational health for staff, etc.
Currently, “La Sala”, is the only SCS in Latin America, and the fourth in the world dedicated only for women. However, at the end 2018, the Mexican government decided to cut funding for all NGOs in the country, including those that provide harm reduction services and opioid overdose response. This year is the third anniversary of La Sala and we are hoping to keep the facility running many more years, for that we need your help.
With this fundraiser, we are expecting to finance a year of services for La Sala. Half of the money will go to paying rent and utilities (water, internet, electricity) for our spaces, and the other half will allow us to cover payroll for our staff, including a peer coordinator and a harm reduction coordinator.
