This is my son Harlen. He is 4 years old and was born with a rare genetic disorder called Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) and has since been diagnosed with Autism (ASD). Because of this, he has complex and severe medical needs.
Harlen is our little cheeky monkey and has a mischievous smile. He loves his iPad and playing with water. With his SMS, Harlen has a number of medical conditions such as Epilepsy, sleep disorder, a heightened pain threshold, global delay and is non verbal. His ASD causes Harlen to have violent and aggressive outbursts. Both these syndromes cause Harlen to have extreme behaviours and self injurious behaviours.
Harlen has many adaptated, or specialised equipment to help him in his daily life including a specialised bed. We are raising money for a specialised travel pod which will provide Harlen with a safe and secure sleeping environment. This travel pod will provide our family and Harlen with an opportunity for much needed respite care. Harlen is unable to sleep anywhere other than home, due to his need for a specialised bed. It would also mean, that as a family we would be able to go on holidays with both our children.
