My name is Ashraf Medhat Abouelkheir, an ophthalmologist from Egypt.

I am a graduate of Alexandria University, where I consistently excelled throughout my studies and graduated with Distinction. I have always believed that hard work, integrity, and dedication should lead to something meaningful—and I continue to hold onto that belief despite the challenges I face today.

I live and work in a small rural town where access to proper eye care is extremely limited. Many patients here cannot afford even basic examinations, and in ophthalmology, delayed or missed care can mean permanent vision loss. I see this reality every day.

From the very beginning of my medical journey, my goal was clear:

to establish a modest but well-equipped eye clinic where I can work with dignity and provide real, ethical medical care—especially to underprivileged patients who have no alternatives and no financial means.

However, the current economic situation in Egypt has made this dream painfully difficult to achieve. The cost of ophthalmic equipment has risen dramatically, placing it far beyond the reach of a young doctor at the start of his career. Despite working continuously and trying to save every possible amount, I often feel trapped—working hard yet unable to move forward, as if running endlessly without arriving anywhere.

At the same time, I am committed to advancing my medical education through master’s degree studies and continuous professional training. These are essential to becoming a competent and responsible ophthalmologist, but they come with heavy and unavoidable financial burdens. Balancing daily living expenses, postgraduate education, and the dream of building a clinic has become overwhelming—especially under the current economic pressures in Egypt.

This fundraising campaign is not about luxury or shortcuts.

It is a sincere attempt to stand on my own feet, to build a small clinic that allows me to practice medicine honorably, and to serve patients who desperately need care but cannot afford it.

The funds raised will be used exclusively to equip the clinic with essential ophthalmic devices, without which proper eye care cannot be delivered. These include:

• Auto-Refractometer / Keratometer

For accurate measurement of refractive errors and basic visual assessment.

• Slit Lamp Biomicroscope

The cornerstone of eye examinations, essential for evaluating the cornea, lens, anterior segment, and diagnosing most ocular diseases.

• Tonometer

For measuring intraocular pressure, a critical test for detecting and monitoring glaucoma.

• Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscopes

For fundus examination and diagnosis of retinal and optic nerve diseases, particularly in diabetic and elderly patients.

• Trial Lens Set and Trial Frame

To accurately prescribe eyeglasses, especially for patients who cannot afford private optical services.

These devices represent the minimum essential setup required to establish a safe, ethical, and functional eye clinic capable of delivering meaningful care to an underserved rural community.
