Rafael Espanosa was born to Mexican parents in Southwest Detroit, in a vibrant neighborhood known as Mexicantown. Life was never easy for Rafael, and from a young age, he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with painful experiences. Despite these challenges, Rafael was passionate about social justice—he joined the Brown Berets, organized marches in Washington, D.C., and spent time in San Antonio, Texas. But addiction eventually took over, and in March 1997, Rafael entered treatment and discovered he was an alcoholic. From that moment, he committed himself to sobriety, believing it had saved his life. Over the next 28 years, Rafael became a pillar of the AA community, working tirelessly to help others find the same hope he had found. He made amends with his family and built lasting relationships that meant the world to him.
In 2018, Rafael returned to Detroit, where he found a home at the historic Hotel Yorba. There, he established the Language of the Heart Group of AA, welcoming hundreds of people seeking sobriety. Rafael supported three weekly meetings at the Yorba Hotel and attended other meetings every day. He was a familiar face at the Art Block and Steppin' In at Nine meetings, and he never missed a convention if he could help it. In fact, he was returning from a convention the day he passed away. Every morning, Rafael began his day by reading pages 86-88 from the Big Book, grounding himself in the principles of recovery before anything else. He sponsored countless people, believing in giving back what was freely given to him. Rafael lived in the moment, never worrying about the future, and embraced each day with gratitude.
He will be remembered most for his unwavering commitment to sobriety and the many lives he touched. Rafael is survived by his son Tony, his sisters Maria and Margaret, and countless AA brothers and sisters who will miss him dearly. Now, Tony is facing the difficult task of saying goodbye to his father and handling the expenses that come with it. Any support you can offer to help Tony and his family cover cremation costs, travel expenses from Texas to Detroit, and other expenses would mean so much during this challenging time. Thank you for honoring Rafael’s memory and supporting his family.
