Hans Muth, legendary BMW designer

Hans Muth is the legendary designer of such iconic vehicles as the BMW R90S, the R100RS, the R65LS and the R80G/S. His designs were instrumental in helping to save the motorcycle division in the 1970’s and remain treasured combinations of motorcycles and art to this day. It would be hard to overstate the impact he had on the world of two-wheeled BMWs.

I had the good fortune to work with Todd Trumbore on the 100th Anniversary Celebration he hosted in Pennsylvania back in September, and we were excited that Hans agreed to join us. Sadly, just before he was to leave Stuttgart, he was stricken with a serious medical condition impacting his vision. We later learned that the situation was much more dire than just that, and he’s now in the process of getting ready for a major surgery late in the year.

Sadly, all of this has put extreme pressure on his family’s finances, even as he passed his 89th birthday. He has asked if his American friends could help in an effort to get past a very challenging period in his life. As many know, he has been incredibly gracious in the past with his time … with his stories … with a willingness to sign pretty much anything put in front of him.
