Hannie’s Medical Care

I broke my ankle in June while still living in Austin, and had surgery on June 26th. The recovery process has been very difficult since the beginning. My insurance lapsed when we moved so for the last two months I have been paying out of pocket for all medical costs associated with trying to figure out why my ankle wouldn’t heal.  I went to two doctors who told me I was fine, and should feel amazing. Neither of them were really concerned with the open incision, the relentless pain or the general unwell feeling I had, but I knew something was wrong. On September 20th I finally saw my current doctor and she knew right away that my ankle was infected. She called for an immediate surgery which was scheduled for this past Thursday. I had my surgery on Thursday as planned, but I woke up to some pretty intense news. After removing the hardware, my surgeon found the bone to be soft and the level of infection is much worse than she anticipated. Soft bone=bone infection. I was immediately admitted to the hospital and the antibiotic IV bags have been coming around the clock since 3pm Thursday. Looks like I won’t be heading home until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest. We’re waiting for the cultures to grow before I can be sent home with a six week IV antibiotic round which will have to be administered by a nurse. The surgery downpayment was $2500, which we paid, but I have no idea how much it will cost us for this hospital stay- especially since I don’t know how long I’ll be here. Once I do leave the hospital I will need a home care nurse to administer the six weeks of antibiotics I’ll need to get rid of this bone infection, and to help me with basic things like helping me make food, use the restroom, etc.. I will not be returning to work for about two months or more. I am so lucky that I found a doctor to help me before the damage was irreversible and I lost my leg, but life doesn’t give you a break or stop for you to catch up and this has been extremely hard on brittney and myself.. We have been knocked down pretty hard this time, and it’s hard to see the light right now. Hoping for the best. Medical costs are mounting. I miss my home, my wife and my dogs so much. Please send her and I some positivity- we really need it right now.❤️ thank you,
