Hey! My name is Hannah Moore, and I'm a junior at the New American Youth Ballet & Conservatory. I've received my academic education and ballet training from the school since 2013, and although I've been given more opportunities than I can count, I want to branch out and explore the dance world outside of Fort Wayne. Here's where you come in...
Somewhere between middle school and high school, I realized the unintentional impact dance holds on the world we live in. Just as Alonzo King once said, “Dance training can't be separate from life training. Everything that comes into our lives is training.” Within every human interaction and daily occurrence is rhythm, pattern, dynamic, and all the characteristics seen in a piece of choreography. In essence, life itself is a dance—intrinsic to the ebbing and flowing of time through generations. It fluctuates, changes, alters with the influence of communication and collaboration.
Recently, I took a series of master classes from Brett Conway, a Fort Wayne native who established a career with Nederlands Dans Theater and Alonzo King LINES Ballet. I was so inspired by his passion, warmth, and commitment when teaching; the cleanliness in his technique with simultaneous abandonment in his movement was so fresh and exciting — it ignited within me a wish to follow in his footsteps.
LINES Ballet Summer Intensive is a five week program in the middle of San Francisco, CA, and explores the teachings of Alonzo King with a goal to provide a strong understanding of classical technique while allowing students the artistic license to immerse themselves in self-discovery. I truly believe in the mission behind the faculty's message, and wish to study from these world-renowned artists, intructors, and dance innovators in a welcoming, nurturing environment.
After auditioning in Chicago for the program, I was offered a spot in their pre-professional session geared for dancers ages 17-24. This means I will be one of the youngest attendees -- pretty cool! The thought of training with more mature, developed dancers and learning from them in our common craft is a chance I can't be thankful enough for. Additionally, the thought of spending 40 hours/week doing what I love in an entirely new setting is liberating and enticing. Going to this intensive would also prepare me for potentially auditioning for their BFA program in a year.
Upon receiving my acceptance email, I learned there was an initial deposit of $700 due on February 1st, the Registration Deadline. This was the hardest payment to make, as it was sudden and was 1/4 of the total tuition. Now, I'm working towards paying off all the tuition by May 8th. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, I did not receive any scholarship or financial assistance from the summer program's scholarship committee.
Also, since I'm in the older division, all acceptees must find their own housing either in a hotel, condo, or apartment for five weeks -- no college dorms are available to us. I've been in contact with a few potential San Francisco residents that have tentatively offered their home for me to stay in, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Furthermore, I'm responsible for buying/preparing my own food for the five week period.
With all that being said, here are the numbers...
Total tuition: $2800
Housing: $1000-2500
Additional funds (travel expenses, grocery shopping, etc.): $1000-$1500
As I anxiously prepare for my senior year, I’m in the midst of deciding what to do following the conclusion of high school. It’s always been my dream to dance for an organization that integrates the connection to societal events and links the gap between viewer and performer. As an individual still unclear of my purpose and where I belong, I hope I can gain a greater understanding of myself through the LINES program. With numerous unanswered questions, there's nothing better than a challenge and complete submersion in the art that is LINES ballet. It would be the greatest privilege to ask, gain knowledge, radiate, and watch the beauty surrounding me at LINES Dance Center this summer.
Thank you for all your support in making this dream come true! It wouldn't be possible if it weren't for your kindness and belief in me.
Joyfully,
Hannah
