I'm raising funds for my umbilical hernia that I have grown to love these past couple years. His name is Hank and when I say "love" I mean "hate and loathe".
An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through the umbilical opening in the abdominal muscles. This has resulted in a slight bulge right above my navel.
Over the past couple years, this hernia has limited me in many ways. I work as a freelancer in the film industry with many of the jobs I book requiring physical strength and ability to lift.
I also regularly volunteer in the disability community, which involves transferring my friends in and out of wheelchairs.
Plus, my rock-climbing adventures have had to be momentarily put on hold.
I am reaching out to all of you because my last couple attempts at correcting this medical issue have failed. I have come to accept that going through the public healthcare system isn't going to be my path for this surgery.
Hernia surgery is one of the more common surgeries to be performed, but I want to make sure I find a surgeon who specializes in this type of surgery and has much experience. I have come to find, through much research, that getting a mesh patch placed over the affected area is the best option for me. This surgical procedure seems to be the most common with the least amount of complications and best long-term outcomes.
If left untreated, my hernia may get larger and become increasingly more painful. I don't want to get to this point. Plus, there's always a possibility of the hernia becoming strangulated (when the blood supply to the herniated tissue has been cut off), which is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
I am very much looking forward to repairing my body and moving forward with my life. This will allow me to hop back into my hobbies at 100% and fully be able to pursue my career.
I'm planning for a January 2020 surgery. Starting off the new year fixing my body sounds like a healthy beginning.
