Hank the cat needs surgery
Donation protected
Hank Moody is a Maine Coone and my emotional support animal. Since we've been in New Orleans, he's been exploring the neighborhood a lot and unfortunately, he was hit by a car (we're not totally certain about this, as we didn't see it happen, but it's what the vet assumes happened considering all of his injuries). He came home on Sunday night with a limp and was hiding in the closet in pain so we took him to the vet. We knew something was wrong with his leg. It turns out, the impact resulted in a fractured tarsal bone (which is the cat equivalent of the ankle) and a diaphragmatic hernia. The ankle we expected, but the hernia we did not. Diaphragmatic hernia means that the membrane that separates his chest cavity from his abdominal cavity ruptured. His intestines were wrapped around his lungs making it almost impossible for him to breathe. If we did not fix the hernia, we would have lost Hank. So we fixed the hernia at the only vet in New Orleans that seemed like they could really do it. That ended up costing $5,000 USD. He is healing well, the hernia surgery was a success, but his paw is still broken in so many places a cast cannot fix it. Surgery to fuse the bone together is the only option outside of amputation, both of which are very much outside of our price range after having paid $5,000 to fix the problem that would have killed him. Hank is strong and he will survive this process, I am just worried about him being in constant pain if we can't fix his paw. The estimate for fixing the tarsal fracture is $3,000+ depending on what they find when they get in there. Sincerely anything helps. Hank is a fighter, but he doesn't have a job and no amount of fight will help if we can't pay for his care.
