Dear friends, family, and colleagues,
On November 19, 2020, our father/grandfather/brother/friend, Hank Herrera passed away from the health complications of COVID-19. He died with the same passionate fight with which he lived, surrounded by the presence of many of his children and his grandson. Although we needed to be there through Zoom, we were able to create a circle of love, with the sound of the ocean and the sight of a beautiful mist displayed through his daughter’s cell phone as she sang. We held his hand as he died through the kindness of his nurse, whose physical hand stood in for his family’s emotional holding. He died in community.
When the pandemic has waned, and it is safe to travel, we will honor Hank’s wishes by scattering his ashes at Martin’s Beach on Half Moon Bay and then have a life celebration—a big party for those who want to gather and honor Hank’s memory by coming together to share our stories about Hank with each other. It was his wish that we gather and find laughter in each other’s company.
For now, we hope that we can stay in touch through social media and email. Many have reached out inquiring about a memorial fund. Thank you so much for wanting to honor Hank’s memory and for caring about helping the family cover expenses related to his passing. We have established this Go Fund Me page for this purpose. Money donated will go directly toward paying funeral home costs and other death related expenses such has packing up and shipping his belongings to family members, paying to get his other belongings out of storage, and contributing to costs that we will incur from holding the Life Celebration when it is safe to do so.
Hank loved life, and we appreciate that his passion for equity and justice will continue through the work of each of you—his dear friends and colleagues. Thank you for being a part of Hank’s community—during his lifetime and now, during his passing.
