Hands Up for Hamish
Donation protected
My nephew Hamish Wilson started University last September at age 18, just a few weeks later he became seriously ill on October 20th and was rushed to hospital.
He had pneumonia which developed into meningitis causing multiple organs to begin failing and he was placed into an induced coma and almost died several times.
Unfortunately he developed sepsis which meant that his limbs needed to be amputated, with both legs from below his knees and both of his hands, so he is now a quadruple amputee.
Hamish has recently been fitted with NHS prosthetic legs and has started walking again; however, he needs to have further operations to the end of his wrists before he can have prosthetic hands supplied.
He will also be supplied with basic NHS hands but ideally he will need more advanced hands which are very expensive in order to live a more fulfilled life.
These can cost up to £4,000 for a basic body powered prosthetic, or starting from £25,000 for an advanced robotic prosthetic.
I am helping raise funds for him, to obtain the best hands we can afford for him by running my first ever marathon on 5th May in Milton Keynes. If you would be kind enough to support me in this endeavour you will be helping him regain his independence.
Hamish is an amazingly positive young man and is adjusting to this terrible change to his life and is planning to re-start his university course again in September this year.
Update: 15/04/2025
Hamish has been enjoying trips to the University, restaurants and pubs with his brother Rory, managing fantastically on his prosthetic legs. He still is having operations on his hands and is unlikely to receive his first prosthetic hands until late summer at the earliest.
Thank you for your support.
