Hananouchi Family Koden

Donation protected
Danny Hananouchi, our brother-in-law, suffered a massive stroke on February 18. There was no warning, no indication that he might have been feeling unwell, nothing. The ambulance arrived quickly, and for the first few days, we had hopes that he might recover. But despite the excellent medical care he received, six days later, on February 24, he died of the brain injury caused by the stroke.

Danny was 56 years old. He left behind his wife—our sister Kerry—and their two children, Daniel (13 years old) and Kathleen (12 years old). We are all still reeling from the shock: it just seems impossible to believe that this vital, active, and loving father, husband, brother, friend could be taken so suddenly.

We have set up this page as a way for friends and family to offer koden or okoden to Kerry and the children. (Here we offer an apology to Danny's side of the family, who, being Japanese Amercan, already know this tradition.) A tradition at Japanese American funerals is to offer the bereaved family "condolence money." Some have asked us about the best way to do this. Normally it would be given to the family at the funeral; however, given pandemic considerations, Danny's service in a few weeks will be attended only by immediate family members. We hope this page provides an easy way for those who would like to observe this tradition and offer support to Danny's family. All contributions made here will go directly to Kerry, and she will put them toward Daniel's and Kathleen's education.

NOTE: For those of you who would like to commerate Danny's memory with a contribution to an organization, Kerry and the children have picked out the California Wildlife Foundation. As many of you know, Danny was an enthusiastic fisherman and loved being outdoors. Danny, Kerry, Daniel, and Kathleen shared many wonderful weekends and vacations camping and fishing at Lake Alpine in Stanislaus National Forest. Daniel and Kathleen thought that supporting an organization that preserves the wildlife habitat that their dad loved would be a fitting way to honor his memory. If you would like to make a donation in Danny's name, you can do that at this website: https://www.californiawildlifefoundation.org/donate/.  When you make your donation, you will see a box that says "Write a note (optional)." In that box, please write, "In Memory of Daniel H. Hananouchi." If you also include Kerry's address in that box (see below), CWF will send an acknowledgement directly to Kerry letting her know of your gift.

Kerry's contact information: Kerry Hananouchi / two-two-one-one Lake Road, Apt. two-zero-four / Belmont, CA  nine-four-zero-zero-two     (You can write the numbers normally when you use  the address --  we're spelling out the numbers here to try to circumvent any bots.)

We're so grateful for all the love and support everyone has shown our sister, nephew, and niece! We know that this kindness and support will help them get through this terrible time.
