I have an amazing friend who has devoted her life to caring for her three children. Her daughter from her first marriage, Hanah, was born with multiple disabilities, cancer, and other health issues. Twice she's been on hospice, but both times has fought her way through. 20 years ago my friend remarried and they had two sons. One has started college, and the other is in high school. Hanah's mom has advocated for her health and her education, giving her daughter a rich life filled with specialized activities that require time and commitment to make happen. Though in a wheelchair, Hanah does water therapy, adapted surfing in the ocean, and even enjoys winter sports on the "skiing" wheelchair that her brother made for her!
Unfortunately, her husband has filed for divorce in the bordering state, which does not require custody payments to adult children, even those with disabilities, and even though he is co-guardian. My friend is smart and works harder than most women I know, but the time required to raise her children has meant she has not been able to build a traditional career. Her own parents have passed away, and there is no other family to help. Until she figures out the next steps, paying for housing, bills and living expenses is going to be challenging. Your help is so appreciated as she seeks to find stability again, care for her kids, and find employment that works for their family.
