Support Hāna’s Dialysis Center Through a Permanent Thrift Shop Structure

Every time a major storm hits Hāna, our thrift shop roof collapses.

The tarps fill with water. The structure sags. Donations get damaged.
And once again, funds that should support patient care are spent replacing temporary materials.

This has happened too many times.

It’s time to build something permanent.

Why This Matters — And Why This Is Urgent

Just four months ago, Maui Now published an article titled “Nation’s First Communal Dialysis Home in Hāna Needs Repairs to Keep Operating.” The article highlighted the fragility of rural healthcare in our town and the repair needs at Hale Pōmaika‘i — the communal dialysis home that has allowed Hāna residents to receive life-sustaining treatment close to home since 2009.

Without local dialysis access, patients must travel more than 100 miles round trip to Central Maui multiple times per week. For individuals with kidney failure, that commute is physically exhausting, financially burdensome, and medically risky.

Now, just four months later, another major storm has swept across the islands, bringing flooding — and once again, the tarps at our thrift shop have blown off.

Once again, the structure has failed.

The timing could not be clearer.

How the Thrift Shop Sustains the Dialysis Center

The thrift shop is not a side project. It is one of the ways the dialysis center sustains itself.

There is no major corporate sponsor underwriting everything. There is no endless repair budget. What we have is a donation box. Community members come in, buy gently used goods, and leave a few dollars — sometimes a little more.

Those small contributions add up over time and help support dialysis operations.

But they are not designed to fund large structural repairs.

Meanwhile, we continue spending significant funds replacing tarps and rebuilding after storms.

That math does not work long term.

If we cannot stabilize this building, we risk destabilizing one of the center’s steady funding streams.

This is not dramatic language.

It is practical reality.

The Solution

We are raising $12,000 to construct a permanent, storm-resistant structure that will:

• Withstand Hāna’s heavy rainfall
• Protect donated goods
• Eliminate repeated tarp replacement costs
• Allow consistent year-round fundraising
• Provide stable, long-term support for the dialysis center

This is not a cosmetic upgrade.

It is a structural necessity.

Tax-Deductible Giving

The dialysis center operates as a nonprofit organization.
All proceeds from this fundraiser are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Your contribution supports rural healthcare access in a direct and measurable way.

A Message to Those Who Love Hāna

Hāna is more than a place to visit.

It is a living community.

Many who own homes here understand that preserving what makes Hāna special requires stewardship. When essential services disappear, communities shrink. When healthcare remains local, families remain intact.

A $12,000 structure is modest by many standards. But for a rural healthcare support system, it makes the difference between constant repair and long-term resilience.

Leadership is not about visibility.
It is about what you choose to sustain.

If you care about this place — if you value its continuity, culture, and people — this is a moment to step forward.

Final Word

We are not asking for another temporary patch.

We are asking to build something that stands.

If 240 people give $50 — we reach our goal.
If 120 people give $100 — we reach our goal.
If a few step forward with larger gifts, we secure this quickly and permanently.

This is crucial now.

Do what’s right for Hāna.
Do what’s right for the place you love.

Mahalo for helping us build it once — and build it right!
