In the Spring of 2019, while working in Georgia, Darren started experiencing severe itching and minor digestive problems. He dismissed most of the issues to a three-month travel diet and southern fried food. Once he returned to River Falls and a normal diet the issues persisted. Working under the assumption the symptoms were related to diet they made numerous modifications. Nothing was working and in January 2020 he started working with doctors in Hudson, WI. After x-rays, ultrasound, MRI and CT scan it was determined that Darren’s gallbladder was the culprit.
In late March his gallbladder was removed, and he was released from the hospital. Two days later he was rushed to the River Falls Hospital emergency room in severe pain. Another ultrasound and night in the hospital he was distended and in severe pain. Darren was transported by ambulance to United Hospital in St. Paul, MN. The pain persisted and he developed sepsis. The following day it was determined he had a bile leak. A stint was installed in his main bile duct to relieve pressure from the leaking duct. After a traumatic and stressful week in the hospital he was released. At this point through all of the doctors he had seen and the tests that were run, the cancer had been missed!
Most of the digestive issues subsided over the summer but mild pain in the right abdomen persisted and daily fatigue became an issue. To combat this, he started a diet to lose weight. The diet was working well, too well. In August 2020 Darren returned to his primary care physician and his blood work indicated high cancer markers. Another CT scan and a biopsy of the liver led to a stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis with a life expectancy of 1-2 years with treatment. He was referred to an oncologist and immediately started chemotherapy. After two months of treatment his condition was worsening. They sought a second opinion from Mayo. It was determined that cancer was misdiagnosed which led to a second round of testing and another biopsy. Mayo determined the cancer is a rare and untreatable angiosarcoma with a 9-12 month prognosis. This is a rare cancer found in the blood usually caused by exposure to chemicals or radiation. They are continuing chemotherapy to extend life while seeking alternative treatments that are not available in this area.
Given these health challenges Darren and his family will face financial hardship as he may be unable to work and Lynn has had to take time off to care for Darren.
Money donated through GoFundMe will be automatically deposited into a WESTconsin Credit Union account that has been set up for the Hampton Family. They will have direct access to this account to immediately start using for expenses. For larger donations or if you are more comfortable you can drop off or send a check directly to the WESTconsin Credit Union in order to avoid fees.
