Halton Black Voices Crowdfunding
Fundraising Goal: 16,000 CAD Dollars
Goal Deadline: April 22nd, 2021
Description:
Halton Black Voices is a newly formed grassroots collective that is dedicated to empowering and creating a safe space for Black voices and our allies. Our goal is to strengthen the Halton region through education and awareness initiatives that elevate all members of the Black community including the 2LGBTQQIA community. We also work closely with Indigenous members of our community in our efforts to liberate racialized voices from systemic oppression.
According to the 2016 census, Halton's visible minority population sits at 25.6%, or one in four Halton residents. Visible minorities make up over 40% of the population in Milton, 30.8% of the Oakville population, and 16% of Burlington's population. Although our population continues to become more diverse, the income inequality gap in Halton continues to grow for visible minority groups. Halton is not protecting BIPOC citizens from poverty or pushing for income equality to ensure that the mental and physical health of these residents are well looked after. Visible minorities in Halton earn significantly less money than the rest of the population; the median total income for the visible minority population in Halton ($31,692) is only about three-quarters (74.4%) of the median total income ($42,577) for the overall population. Over one in five (21.2%) of citizens who are visible minorities in Halton earned less than $10,000 compared to only 14.6% for the overall population.
In 2016, there were over 20,000 citizens who identify as visible minorities living in poverty in Halton, or 14.4% of the total population, compared to 8.2% for the overall population- and this number continues to grow. We are not doing enough in Halton to protect our most vulnerable communities. Halton Black Voices recognizes the need for programming to address this growing inequality, and is providing programming to Black and other racialized citizens to improve their wellbeing and livelihood. Privileged and white Halton residents can donate to our collective and see measurable changes within their own communities as we continue to provide: healing opportunities for marginalized citizens, programming that promotes health and wellbeing in partnership with local mental health and fitness professionals, empowerment programming for youth, and educational opportunities for all Halton citizens who are willing to question inequitable social structures that support white supremacy at the expense of the prosperity of BIPOC citizens in Halton.
In order to see our mission through we need funding. Our goal is to raise 16,000 dollars in order to cover programming costs and compensation to our dedicated staff, and our main goal: registering as a charity so we can continue working to support Black community members in Halton. We would really appreciate your support. Please consider learning more about us by visiting our website, or by contacting us.
