My name is Hali'a Eastburn and I'm a Biology student at University of Florida. For those of you who know me, you understand how much biology isn't just my major or career choice but a part of who I am as I person. I love the natural world and I want to make a big impact in saving it.
So... I was selected to be 1 of 12 students from UF to go to Madagascar this summer, for the entire month of July, to participate in a fully immersive study abroad program!
For those of you who know nothing about Madagascar... it is located off the southeastern coast of Africa and 90% of the plants and animals found there are only found there. You might have heard of lemurs? fossa? aye-aye? All there!
During this trip we'll be traveling over half the nation visiting field research sites, sustainable farms, cities, rural villages and national parks learning about conservation and biodiversity in developing countries. We'll meet the people, learn about their culture and struggles balancing conservation and survival at the same time we'll be learning about the beautiful ecosystems that we need to fight to protect. It's pretty much the opportunity of a lifetime.
So how can you help??
Well if you haven't already guessed, it ain't cheap! I've already received a small schlolarship to assist with tuition fees but the flight alone will be around $2500. I'm working on getting more aid but in the mean time I wanted to reach out to all of you to ask for your help!! Help me I'm poor!
I turn 30!! on May 3rd and a few of you have asked about taking me out or doing something special for my big day and I've thought long and hard about how I want to spend 30. And I'm asking you all to take any money you'd spend on cards, gifts, gift cards, dinners, etc. and help me get to Madagascar!!
Every cent donated through this site will go to equipment or meals for this trip. I've taken out a loan to cover tuition for now and am asking for $3500 to cover the flight, gear, and meals during my stay and while traveling. I'll need to book my flight in the next month-ish and the rest of tuition needs to be paid by the end of May. This is the bare minimum I would need so anything over will definitely help provide a cushion in case of emergencies and allow me to start paying back my loan now.
Any amount you can send my way would be enormously appreciated and I'll even send you a small gift from my travels. It probably won't be a baby lemur but I'll see what I can do ;)
