Mountain Haleakala Horse Rescue Retirement was founded by James M. Aikala Abraham, a proud Hawaiian and Vietnam Veteran, who has a deep love for horses and knows first hand the therapeutic benefits of being around these magnificent animals. He lives on 17 acres of pristine grazing land on the slopes of Haleakala in a Hawaiian Homestead community.
Abe has been taking in old, injured, traumatized and abandoned horses for 2 decades. Until recently, the herd had free range on the slopes of Haleakala of over 30,000 acres, which enabled him to care for a large number of horses and keep our costs to a minimum. New restrictions set in place by Hawaiian Homelands is requiring us to fence in all the horses effective immediately. This poses two urgent issues:
1. We are required to fence in his remaining 10 acres to secure the horses that are not already in the 7 fenced acres, stalls and round pen. Fencing runs $1000 per acre in Hawaii
so we need 10K for that alone.
2. Without the grazing privileges on the free range, we will need a lot more money to supplement their feed with alfalfa pellets, grain and special nutrients for some of our older horse who are 20+ years old.
3. We will need ongoing support for vet bills, ferrier care, and FOOD FOOD FOOD but this can be addressed at a later time once we get over this first hurdle of building them 4 safe enclosures on the other unfenced 10 acres Abe owns where we can separate the older retired horses, from the stallions, from the injured horses and finally the ones we are working with to train and sell.
We are asking for 15K to pay for the fencing and the laborers to build it and ongoing operating costs. We have secured a team of carpenters, roofers, and ranch hands who have agreed to come out and work to get this done once we have materials purchased. We will have a good 'ol fashioned local-style camp out and work hard to get the fence done in one weekend but we need the funds for materials first.
We are calling on all horse lovers to please chip what you can to help our cause and keep these beautiful animals safe. We are selling the horses that we can secure safe and loving homes for that are rideable and / or breedable. Many are pure-bred Arabians, or Arab / Quarter mixes.
