Hakuna Matata, Kilimanjaro

On February 15 this year, I will join 10 other volunteers globally to make an attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro - the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.  19,341 Ft (5,895 m), to be precise.

I'm doing this for two reasons. Primarily, the climb is to raise funds for  Help For Children (HFC).  Since 1998, HFC has provided grants to child abuse prevention and treatment interventions, making the world a safer place for children. We are climbing a mountain to help those children who have to climb one daily.

Personally, height scares the hell out of me! I hope to come out of the challenge more calm and resilient; what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I have also gained an unexpected benefit throughout my months of preparation - the discovery of exciting trails and beautiful scenery in and around New York that I previously took for granted. You'll see some winter scenery shots from Anthony's Nose, and Bull Hill Cold Spring as you scroll down.

At least 50% of your donation will go directly to the charity leading the climb - HFC. The remainder will be used to cover park fees, service fees for local guides and porters, my equipment/gear, and medical & insurance expenses. They are quickly adding up to over $5,000.

Thank you for your support and donations to this global endeavor.
