Help Recover a Hajj Route Lost 500 Year Ago | From Al-Andalus to Makkah on Horseback

A unique hajj expedition by horse from Southern Spain recovering the route and experience of the old Muslim Andalusians lost five centuries ago. Hajj on Horseback aims to replicate the typical hajj journey of the Andalusians more than 500 years since the last recorded hajj journey from Spain. For this aim, a group of Spanish Muslims intend to go from South Spain to Makkah, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, using specialised Arabian endurance horses trained for a journey of this calibre. This project, therefore, means not only the recovery of a historical hajj route lost after the Christian conquest of Al-Andalus, but the recovery of their experience and legacy. We aim to start the journey in autumn 2024 for hajj 2025, insha Allah.

“Announce Hajj to mankind. They will come to you on foot and on every sort of lean animal, coming by every distant road, so that they can be present at what will profit them and invoke Allah's name on specific days over livestock He has provided for them. Eat of them and feed those who are poor and in need. They should end their state of self-neglect, fulfil their vowels and circle the Ancient House”. [Qur'an 22:25-27]

Witness the impact of your donation every step of the way: the whole journey will be documented and shared on Instagram so you can accompany us on our journey, where we will face the difficulties of travelling long distances by horse, crossing borders, camping in the wild, caring for the horses' wellbeing, being received by Muslims on the way and culminate our pilgrimage by entering Makkah (sans horses) to perform Hajj, having completed the journey of our lives, insha Allah.

We will also produce a documentary and mention the names in the credits of everyone that has helped us with their donations to make this unique hajj journey possible.

The group forming Hajj on Horseback has been training for three years, testing rider and horse resistance, equipments and diverse weather conditions.
