As many of you know, Haiti suffered a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on August 14, 2021. The current death toll is 2,200 people with hundreds more still missing. Many homes, hospitals, schools, churches, and other structures were destroyed. This GoFundMe page was created by four Haitian-American siblings who you might know (Patrick, Joseph, Marcus, & Mhandy) who were raised and live in the United States. Our mother (Immacula Pierre - pictured above, 3rd from left in straw hat) lives in Haiti. The earthquake’s epicenter in the southwestern region of Haiti in the city of Les Cayes is right by our mother’s village.
Fortunately our mom is alive and was not hurt. This fundraiser is actually not for her, but rather for her to help the many villages around her. She is in a unique position to give direct assistance and we explain why further down. Your donation towards our goal of $50,000 will go directly to earthquake survivors. Their immediate needs are: medical treatments for the injured, burials of the deceased, food and water for the displaced, rebuilding and repair of homes, community clinics, schools, churches, roads, and power supply issues. Tropical storm Grace also rolled across Haiti four days after the earthquake causing flooding in some areas and making rescues, repairs, and healthcare even more difficult. So your donation will help an ever evolving critical situation.
No part of your donation will go towards administrative fees, nonprofit staff salaries, or get pocketed in any way, as our mom does independent missionary work and already resides in Haiti. She is well connected with the affected regional communities. You see, our mom Immacula emigrated to the U.S. back in 1972 and worked for forty years before retiring in 2012 to return to her native village in the south of Haiti. During her career she worked as a nurse’s aide caring for the elderly in their homes and in various nursing homes, and hospitals. Though she lived, worked, and raised us here, her heart never left Haiti. For as long as we can remember, the whole time we were growing up, mom would always collect second hand clothing & appliances, or buy school & medical supplies, and food staples with her own money, or donations from friends and family. She would go to Haiti every summer with her contributions and distribute them to the poor. Growing up, our garage at home in the States was always filled to the brim with so many things that most times we had to park our car outside. Growing up, the four of us spent every summer helping our mom organize and box these donations in our garage. A chore we did not enjoy, but understand and appreciate now as adults.
Before retiring, and even more so after her retirement to Haiti, Immacula has accomplished greater charitable projects. Mostly with her own money and some donations from us and other family, she has completed the following projects in her surrounding towns in southwest Haiti (these are before and apart from the earthquake):
- Built a local preschool for kids aged three to five and continues to pay for teacher salaries and necessary maintenance
- Built a local morgue and purchased 2 ambulances
- Built a soup kitchen and supplies it with food for the poorest of the poor in Les Cayes
- Most recently in 2019, built and launched a local clinic, and partially pays for salaries of doctors and medical staff
- Regularly visits and cares for seniors in their homes who have outlived their children and have no one else to care for them
- Medical supplies and services to our local hospital, Bon Fin
- Built an expansion on the local church Mount Carmel, and supplied it with benches/pews.
Today our mother Immacula is literally running a refugee camp out of her courtyard. For those who show up it is the only meal and comfort they will receive for the entire day. Some villagers are joining our mom at night to sleep in her courtyard. Because their structures are unsafe and many have been flattened.
We mentioned these previous works to let you know that Immacula has long served and is very familiar with the needs of those living in many southwestern towns affected by the earthquake. This money will be sent to her and she’ll put it to direct and good use to relieve those suffering. We thank you in advance and are grateful for your help to the people of Haiti. We’ll keep updating this page with photos and stories of the people you helped.
