Hagerstown BJJ Academy Quarantine Relief

As you all know, Gov Hogan issued an order closing all “non-essential” businesses in the state in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19, with an undetermined end date. This has had a devastating impact on small businesses not only in Maryland, but across the country. 

Included in this mandatory shut down, are all gyms, fitness centers, and martial arts academies. Per Maryland Commercial Law §14-12B-04, these businesses are not permitted to collect dues during the shutdown. Relief has been offered by the government in the form of low interest loans and a requirement for landlords to halt eviction proceedings, which unfortunately only prolongs the bleeding for some of these businesses, digging them a hole that they may not be able to climb out of. 

Coach Mike and Trish have given us so much in the form of personal betterment, achievement, comradery, and more. This is an opportunity for us to give back, and ensure we still have our home away from home when this whole thing subsides. 

The academy is legally prohibited from collecting dues during this, despite many of us willing to continue to contribute. If your financial situation has not been detrimentally impacted by the shutdown, and you’re able to help, please consider giving what you can. Remember it’s not just us fighters that feed the academy. It’s the kids, the after school program, etc. If you’re not a member and see this, and have the ability to help a small business in need to reduce the economic bruise this shutdown will inevitably leave on our community, consider helping. 

I intend on leaving this fundraiser open until Mike can reopen the doors. At that time we’ll present this to the school and put these hard times behind us.
