Hadleigh House Fire

Donation protected
A devastating fire in Tower Hamlets. Support the victims today!

At 3am, May 28th 2020 the Hadleigh House residential block in East London suffered a devastating fire. Over 100 residents, including families with young children and vulnerable individuals, barely managed to escape with their lives with only a few hospitalised. This came at the height of lockdown, leaving the victims in a very vulnerable position.

Please share this campaign and donate if you can. We need as much help as we can get as we work through this ongoing crisis.

This fund is led by the Hadleigh House Support Group; made up of the residents, victims of this fire and those supporting us. The fundraiser seeks to garner further support and spread the word about the tragedy and the subsequent turmoil which was largely caused and exacerbated by the failings and negligence of the local council - a story echoing the Grenfell tower fire in numerous ways.

Our goal is stability and justice for all those affected by the incident.

This GoFundMe has been set up as a last resort as our calls for support to the Tower Hamlets Council, Bancroft TMO and the insurance companies have been ignored and dismissed. We are displaced from our homes as the damage to our flats & belongings are severe and costly (in excess of £2M+ damages) resulting in devastating consequences to our livelihoods, finances, and families -  further worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

========= OUR CURRENT SITUATION =========

Currently, residents have been placed in unsuitable temporary shelter with only a fraction of the furnishings they need. Many fittings and fixtures are broken such as taps and doors, while supplied white goods have been faulty and improperly installed. For example, many residents have been unable to shower, clean and do laundry (with what few clothes they have). Additionally, the council and their affiliate support groups have rejected any support for any clothing and other furnishings.

The council has prevented residents from accessing the block to salvage any remaining belongings. Any belongings that could have been salvaged have now been damaged beyond use or repair by fire, smoke and water damage. The council will only allow households to access any remaining belongings towards the start of September and have stated residents are only covered if they have contents insurance. Many residents are living in poverty and so do not have the luxury to pay for this. Tower Hamlets Homes will not take liability for this nor compensate the residents, and so many are left without support.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS HELP DIRECTLY

- Towards emergency provisions, clothing and lost belongings for the victims.
- Towards the legal case against Tower Hamlets Council.

WHAT WE NEED FROM THE COUNCIL

- VICTIM SUPPORT: Tower Hamlets Council and their affiliates (e.g. the Resident Support Scheme) must follow through and provide support to residents in need as was promised. Tower Hamlets Homes must ensure private tenants have affordable suitable & safe temporary housing options. Ensure the council provides compensation for further damage to belongings and trauma to residents.
- ACCOUNTABILITY: The council must begin a public enquiry into fire safety including fire safety assessments and their subsequent inaction, alongside setting up a residents committee.
- LEGAL ACTION: If these needs are not met, the Hadleigh House Support Group will bring forward a legal case against Tower Hamlets Council, Tower Hamlets Homes and the Bancroft TMO.

====== HOW TO SUPPORT OUR RESIDENTS ======

Your support is needed in any way possible whether that be financially, physically or in terms of legal expertise. We believe the total cost (including legal costs) will exceed £50,000 but we are aiming for £10,000 initially as we begin this process of assessment. Our priority is the short term well-being and safety of the residents.

Monetary donations will be distributed equally in support of displaced fire evacuees to assist with emergency costs. We will also accept physical donations of "New and/or In-Good Condition" clothing and equipment where applicable. Our displaced families, now in temporary shelters, have lost nearly all of their personal belongings due to the extreme fire and water damage and have not been allowed in to recover possessions either.

Donate now or contact the Hadleigh House Fundraising team down below now to support us with:

- Clothing
- Toiletries
- Furnishings & appliances
- Medical & baby supplies

In the Long Term:

If you can provide legal support and advice, contact the Hadleigh House Fundraising team now to aid the traumatised families in their case against Tower Hamlets council and insurance companies. These organisations have:

- Dodged their liability
- Prevented insurance claims from being processed
- Rejected any investigations into their internal fire safety process

In order to take them to court, we require support for each family ignored or as a collective, both of which will be a massive undertaking. Council legal practices prevent this situation from being covered by legal aid and so we find ourselves at odds against a system that punishes victims of fire. The pandemic has only worsened their neglect of our situation and thus in order to mount our legal challenge, we need to cover initial legal costs of £400 per household (a total of £12,000 for 30 households).

==========================================

Please help us push past this barrier and get these people as much support as possible! No one deserves to go through this, especially during such a taxing time with residents losing jobs and education opportunities alongside their homes.

Once again we urge you to SHARE AND DONATE NOW! Please follow and share our page and join our group for future updates.
