Hola! My name is Hadiya Ahmed and I am currently a junior in High School. I’ve recently been accepted into a really exciting summer study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain, through the CIEE program which I hope to pursue. This cultural immersion experience will help me build my Spanish skills (in hopes to soon become fluent!), push me out of my comfort zone, and help me further develop my independence and self-confidence!

My love for cultural immersions stems from my very own tight-knit Ethiopian community in Chicago, and attending an international French school. Being in an intercultural environment has been an incredible experience for me, as I’m surrounded by people with so many unique backgrounds. This program would be an incredible opportunity for me to be in a completely new culture, and expand my worldview beyond Chicago.

A bit about me! Many have described me as a creative thinker, as I enjoy taking on spontaneous projects that allow me to tap into my artistic inner being. I spend my free time making handmade gifts, such as scrapbooks and embroidered clothing for my loved ones in order to capture memories, celebrate milestones, or simply create something beautiful. My love for thoughtfully created art is also why I am so drawn to Spanish architecture. Architecture is one of my favorite styles of art, and I hope to one day become an architect! The intricate details in the structure of the buildings, Cathedrals, and colorful neighborhoods in Barcelona, have always enticed me to want to know more about its history! By exploring the influence of Catalan culture on its architectural style, I hope to better understand the cultural identity of Barcelona and expand my knowledge on its regional history.

As you can see, I’m really excited to travel to Barcelona! To make this dream into a reality, I’ve applied to various funding opportunities. Unfortunately, I was unable to apply for full funding and will be working this summer as well as fundraising to try and cover the cost of this trip.
