If you are part of the Selina family, or if you’ve had the opportunity to experience any of our locations around the world, we ask you to join us in helping our incredible staff, many of whom are facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis.
100% of the proceeds will go directly to our most vulnerable employees, who have been furloughed and may be having difficulty to meet the basic needs of their families to cover food, housing and medical costs. $18,000 of the Relief Fund has been seeded by our Executive Team.
Our number one priority during this time has been continuing to safely serve our guests, for whom we’re providing safe shelter in several locations, and ensuring the health and safety of our team and community.
Selina staff is our family and we wish we didn’t have to take the difficult decisions to furlough or lay-off a single staff member. However, like many hospitality and travel operators, we are in a moment unlike anything the industry has experienced before. With travelers responsibly following global health protocols and staying home - a best-case scenario to help resolve this global health crisis - a number of our locations have been impacted.
We are doing everything we can to retain our staff’s jobs and livelihood. We have taken company-wide cost-saving measures, including a 30% salary reduction of all the executive and corporate teams since mid-March. We are offering free rooms for staff people who are experiencing housing insecurity. We are working with the Red Cross and local authorities to offer room and board to medical staff who are away from their homes. And, our HR and finance teams are working to ensure that all eligible staff can easily access country labor relief packages, where they are available.
Even in light of all these measures, we have been forced to make the difficult decision to temporarily close some of our locations globally and furlough many hardworking staff members.
Many countries where we operate have limited resources and infrastructure to be able to support the overwhelming financial hardship our employees are facing. This is why we are looking into many alternatives to help them out during this crisis, including financial assistance through the Selina Employee Relief Fund.
As of April 23, we have had 203 applications to the fund. If we reach our fundraising goal of $75,000 we will be able to give an average of $300 grant to each applicant to assist in replacing wages lost due to furloughs. This grant amount represents an above average minimum wage in many of the applicant’s countries.

This employee relief campaign is being organized by Eva Holt, Global Impact Director (CSR) for Selina employees who were furloughed or terminated post March 10th, 2020 due to the temporary closure of some of our assets. Eva Holt is part of the Employee Relief Fund Committee along with representatives from the legal, finance, operations and human resources team departments. Funds will be withdrawn into a company account overseen by the legal and finance department and distributed to applicants.
To apply for funds, please submit your information here. Funds will be distributed to employees who apply for the fund before May 5th, 2020 and who meet the below eligible criteria:
- Must have worked for the company for a minimum of 6 months
- Terminated post March 10, 2020
- Must have been earning minimum wage at the time of termination/ furlough
- Must have left the company in good standing
