Our dearest Nicole, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of two with a prognosis to live only to the age of ten. From that day forward, her parents have been fighting to afford and provide the best healthcare to effectively treat and manage her symptoms while never giving up hope that she could live a full and happy life.
This hope and passion to see Nicole live her best life despite the odds against her gave her the strength to not only give birth to her beautiful daughter, Kayla, yet she is a breast cancer survivor and was blessed enough to celebrate her 54th birthday this past July, living 44 years beyond the time she was expected to live with cystic fibrosis. She is not only a medical miracle; she is the miracle we all needed: to believe in the unbelievable, to achieve the unreachable and to make possible the impossible.
With each and every milestone and setback along the way, she has managed to be a blessing to others, most notably her daughter, Kayla, whom she raised as a single mother battling cystic fibrosis. Kayla is an aspiring nurse, who has recently taken a break from her program to care for her mother, who has yet another setback to overcome, the need for a lung transplant. She. is. a. true. survivor!
While under care at Emory University, Nicole's doctors were moved to write a letter of referral and recommendation for a lung transplant at Duke University in North Carolina. As the largest and most reputable lung transplant center in the southeast, we are optimistic that Nicole will receive the best care possible during this process and beyond. Her medical team is hopeful and believes she will have a successful surgical procedure and live to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis in black and brown communities as CF is uncommon in ethnic groups, affecting only 1 in 17,000 African Americans and 1 in 31,000 Asian Americans. Emory's CF medical community has deemed Nicole's life and journey, a medical miracle, as her survival will be an opportunity to educate and empower CF patients throughout the world particularly in ethnic communities.
Presently, Nicole's medical costs are covered through Medicare and Medicaid at 80% as she will need additional funds to cover associated costs to include housing, caretakers, transportation, meals and family support. She is preparing for pre-operative care and relocation to North Carolina for the procedure. Nicole and family would like to thank each and everyone of you in advance for your thoughts, prayers, support and monetary donations. We kindly ask that you share Nicole's journey with your network of family, friends and colleagues.
