Help Luisa fight Cancer

This is Luisa Fernanda, she is a 7 year old girl from Medellin, Colombia. She is a cheerleader at her school and loves to paint and dance. She is smart, fun, lovable and loves to put the conversation on the table; she loves to talk. Not long ago, she started having vomiting and headaches, at the same time started having balance issues and one of her eyes is deviating out, they found a brain tumor which needed to be surgically removed with a craniotomy and a biopsy was taken at that point. Right after her surgery she developed meningitis ( inflammation of the brain and spinal cord cause by bacteria or virus) and also developed hydrocephalus ( build up of fluid within the brain). She had to be surgically intervene two more times until they placed a shunt to help the cerebral spinal fluid drain into her abdomen. On Ester Sunday 04/ 09/ 23 things took a turn for the worst and the doctors informed the parents the biopsy came back as Anaplastic Pilocytic Astrocytoma with proliferation of 40% in some areas. This type of cancer that affects the glial cells in our brains. Unfortunately in Colombia the medical team has told them they do not have any treatment available that they can offer, no chemotherapy, medication or surgery, they do not have the technology and equipment available to provide the needed treatment. As she slowly declines they are offering photon radiation therapy which can damage nearby healthy tissues and can cause significant side effects but unfortunately that’s all they can offer because they do not have proton therapy which will be much safer. Her life expectancy is probably a year or two according to the medical team.

The raising of these funds will go towards medical expenses, and traveling expenses as we are trying to contact St. Jude, Boston Children’s Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital and others for a second review of her medical records. This second opinion reviews cost anywhere up to $2,500 alone. Luisa’s parents haven’t left her side since day one and unfortunately risk their jobs by doing so. We are knocking all doors possible to provide Luisa a fighting chance.

According to their website, The Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Pediatric Low-Grade Astrocytoma (PLGA) Program is the world's only multidisciplinary clinical and research program for pediatric low-grade gliomas, including pilocytic astrocytoma. Established in 2007 with support from the PLGA Foundation, the program looks for more effective, less toxic treatments and a cure for children battling brain tumors. Innovative treatments have led to very high cure rates of 90 to 95 percent. Children cured of pilocytic astrocytoma enjoy a quality of life better than most other children with cancer. Balance, strength, and coordination may be compromised, but fertility and life expectancy are not. Luisa’s dream is to do her first communion when she reaches 9 years of age and to become an engineer. Please help us be able to provide a fighting chance for Luisa. Lamentablemente en Colombia el equipo médico les ha dicho que no tienen ningún tratamiento disponible que puedan ofrecer, ni quimioterapia, ni medicamentos ni cirugía, no cuentan con la tecnología y el equipo disponible para brindar el tratamiento necesario. A medida que ella declina lentamente, están ofreciendo radioterapia con fotones que puede dañar los tejidos sanos cercanos y puede causar efectos secundarios significativos, pero desafortunadamente eso es todo lo que pueden ofrecer porque no tienen terapia de protones, que será mucho más segura. Su esperanza de vida es probablemente de uno o dos años según el equipo médico. La recaudación de estos fondos se destinará a gastos médicos y gastos de viaje, ya que estamos tratando de comunicarnos con St. Jude, el Boston Children's Hospital, el San Francisco General Hospital y otros para una segunda revisión de sus registros médicos.
