Here are Michelle’s words:
“Edgar Perez Acevedo
While at work on the evening of October 26th, my dad suffered an ischemic stroke. The anticoagulant medicine used to treat his stroke worked, but three hours later he suffered hemorrhaging in another area of the brain. An emergency craniectomy was needed the following day to relieve the pressure and swelling in his brain caused by the bleeding. He seemed to have responded well to the surgery. About a day later he had both vascular thrombosis and embolic strokes and because of the initial brain bleed, he could not be provided with additional blood thinners. His body fought hard to the end the way he had fought his whole life, but he was eventually declared brain dead on November 5th and passed away that afternoon.
My father’s story is very similar to that of many immigrants who have come to the United States. He had started working at the age of eight in Cartagena, Colombia and longed for a better life for his family. He emigrated in the late 80s to Union City, New Jersey and had worked in various jobs since then. He was most proud of his two most recent jobs; working for the Union City Board of Education and Saint Peter’s University. Growing up he had always stressed the importance of a good education and having ensured my sister and I completed our education was one of the greatest honors of his life. He loved to laugh, smile, and dance. Some of his greatest words of wisdom included “this is temporary” when things got rough “mal tiempo, buena cara” and my personal favorite “if you’re going to do something, do it right or don’t do it al all.”
All funds will be used to pay medical bills and remaining debt. Any amount helps.
