Peace and Blessings to All,
This comes from a circle of friends and family in arms for our beautiful sister, Sonya.
Sonya, by passion and life’s purpose, is a nurturer. Always an inviting smile, a warm embrace, a dependable hand, a soothing shoulder, an attentive ear, an honest and wise word, an encouraging and supportive voice, an emotional safe haven - she gives us all this love and light genuinely.
She shows up unconditionally as a loving wife and mother of four, an attentive caregiver to a handicapped parent, and as a dedicated nurse of over 29 years. She gives with an open heart and hands all of herself and never expects anything in return. And all the while, she laughs and sings and dances with every beautiful moment life brings, never taking any of it for granted.
We emphasize the grace and strength Sonya has, as you would never know the battle with cancer she faces daily. For over 20 years, she has fought head-on and successfully (To God be the Glory) with the disease through multiple surgeries and chemotherapy.
- 2001 dx: breast cancer, chemotherapy, radiation
- 2002 - hysterectomy
- 2004 - mastectomy and reconstruction
- 2015 dx - with rare appendix cancer (pseudomyxoma peritonei)
- 10/2015 - 1st MOAS (mother of all surgeries) to remove tumors in GI sysem
- 10/2015 - 2nd surgery to remove residual cancer and receive HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy)
- 8/2016 - emergency surgery for consequential bowel obstruction
- Summer 2018 - 3 months of chemotherapy
- 10/2018 - 2nd MAOS and HIPEC. Including liver resection, 4th bowel resection, bladder reconstruction, bilateral collapsed lungs
- 7/2022 - 3rd MAOS to remove recurring tumors resulting in major complications and 3+ wk hospital stay. GI system is currently unable to safely tolerate food resulting in 16hrs/day TPN administration via central line
(Definition: Mother of all Surgeries - debulking surgeries that can take 12 hours or more and require large and extensive incisions).
However, recently, it has resurfaced, and our dear friend is waging this war again. Although her spirit speaks Victory, her road to recovery will be long and challenging, affecting the normalcy of life and her ability to provide for herself and others for a while.
As independent as they come, she would hesitate to share such and think of it as burdensome to others. But as she has shown throughout life, LOVE knows no boundaries and is unconditionally given and received. Looking toward her road ahead, Sonya and the family will need layers of care and assistance. As a result of ongoing treatment, increased medical bills, large insurance deductibles, and lack of work/salary due to illness - financially, the family sees difficult times.
In care and concern, we humbly ask you to please give whatever you can to help lighten the load she carries financially so she can focus on her mental and physical strength on this next journey. And that smile, that ear, that shoulder, those encouraging words and support that she pours out in her life would be the most potent medicine to give right back!
We thank you in advance. May God Bless you today and onwards.
