Peace,
Yesterday marked the first day of my final year in college, and my financial aid has pretty much been exhausted. I've been working consistently, and my grades are good, but I am at the absolute end of my scholarship and aid options. In order to walk in May 2020, I need to raise $16,000 by January 1st, 2020.
Three years ago, I sent out this message, and raised enough to start my college career:
"My name is Johari. I'm 18 years old and I've just been accepted into the highly competitive School of Theatre, Film and Media Arts at Temple University. Unfortunately, I live at the poverty line. Without help, I won't be able to go. Getting into college is the most important thing I have ever done, but I need help to see it through. My family situation is... difficult. At 14 years old, I had to leave home to live with family friends. Before starting 9th grade, I had never been to school before, so it took time to adjust to the pace, the work, the people in high school. With help from my chosen family Sala, Austin, Azali and Malkia and others -- I not only gained my high school diploma, but was accepted to college. As a low-income Black girl, I was taught to take care of others, and spent my childhood taking care of younger siblings. Now, I need your help."
Since then, I have worked so hard to get to where I am now -- I am on committees, organizing events, working part-time at a youth leadership program, touring with my theatre company -- all while maintaining a 3.5 average.
All I want to do is finish. I am working hard, and can end with a bang, if you can chip in anything from $10 to $1,000 -- or whatever you can to help me wrap this college thing up. Thank you!
