I have overcome many obstacles in my life, but this is one obstacle that I know I cannot overcome on my own.
I am a 63-year-old Navy Veteran who was raised in Santa Clara, California. In a charming close-knit neighborhood. The only immediate family I have remaining here in the bay area is my daughter, Lisa.
I have always had good health without even a hint of the typical illnesses that come with age. No issues with high blood pressure, cholesterol or even diabetes.
After having abdominal discomfort for some time, I decided to seek out medical attention. Doctors did blood tests, imaging and a biopsy. The results from the biopsy came back with devastating news. My Doctor hit me with the C word… Cancer. It was as if the air got sucked out of my lungs, accompanied by feelings of panic and grief. They diagnosed me as having Colon Cancer with Liver Metastasis. To put it simply, I have Colon Cancer that spread to my liver. To add insult to injury, my Doctor informed me that I had a cancerous lesion in my stomach.
A majority of the disease is in my liver and what was once discomfort, evolved into pain so excruciating that it can be debilitating. On those bad days, I'm not able to work or even run basic errands. I can't even begin to imagine what Chemo will be like for me.
As a small business owner, if I don’t go into work, I take a financial loss for that day. COVID-19 has also affected my business, much like all small businesses across the US. Despite everything my daughter, Lisa, and I are going through, we remain hopeful. This is by far the most difficult challenge we have ever faced, but we aren't giving up! All the love and support I have received is overwhelming and for that I am eternally grateful.
